About Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF)

Organization

There are over 75,000 Buddhist temples in Japan, many of which belong to one of the major denominations. Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF) is the only federation of traditional Buddhism in Japan with consisting of 105 organizations. (as of June 2021)
Based on the spirit of “harmony” of the Buddha, we strive to contribute to world peace and spread Buddhist culture in society.

The origin of JBF is the “Bukkyo Konwakai (Buddhist Interfaith)”, which was formed in 1900 to oppose religious control by the state. After several changes, the JBF was officially launched in 1957.

History of JBF (Japanese)

In order to promote cooperation with other religions, we have formed the Japanese Association of Religious Organizations (Buddhism, Shintoism, Christianity, new religions) and are responsible for contacting the government and public offices. Furthermore, we have joined The World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) to promote interaction between Buddhists and other religions around the world, contributing to the realization of world peace.
